What Highlight Publishing is looking for

We do not want short stories, short story collections, novellas, poetry, or novels in other genres. The average length of the titles we publish varies but is almost never less than 80,000 words.

We accept unsolicited submissions that meet our guidelines. Importantly, your manuscript needs to be error free in your choice of language, your use of language conventions, the narrative's continuity, and in the way your narrative is structured.

We require authors to work with a reputable manuscript service (recommended by the state Writers Centres) to get their work to the stage where it is ready to be published. For decades, it has been the author's financial responsibility to ensure manuscripts are structurally tight and error free.

Our editors will review the final submission for publication but will not undertake detailed editing or further developmental work with the author.

How to submit


Send us a pitch (no more than 300 words), a synopsis (150-200 words) with the logline as the first paragraph of the synopsis, and the first 15000 words of the manuscript with a cover letter. We prefer electronic submissions in pdf, .doc or .docx format but do accept letter-quality computer-generated printed manuscripts. Please use Times New Roman 12 pitch font for all writing.

Authors offering their work to Highlight Publishing for consideration should provide an error free copy of their manuscript and the contact details of the professional editor with whom they have worked.

Importantly, you also need to provide a copy of a recent professional manuscript assessment from an approved manuscript service. The assessment should indicate your manuscript is indeed ready for submission to a publishing house for its consideration. Further, the assessment should confirm your work does not require further development and is error free. Contact details of the manuscript service also need to be provided.

The manuscript assessment in itself is not a guarantee of publication, but it will get your manuscript considered promptly.

The publishing industry is highly competitive. It is a business, not a philanthropic literary enterprise. Accordingly, Highlight Publishing only accept manuscripts that demonstrate quality storytelling and exploration of the human condition in the respective genre and that have prospect of sufficient sales to make each project financially viable.

The manuscript must be on A4-size pages, double-spaced, with at least 2cm wide margins all around. Please print single-sided, number your pages consecutively, and put the title of your novel at the top of each page. Manuscripts should always be unbound. Please type your name, address and phone number in the upper right hand corner of the first page of your manuscript. Right under this, please put the length of your manuscript in number of words.

Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your submission for our correspondence. We ask that you only send us disposable copies of your manuscript, which will be recycled in the event they are not found suitable for publication. We regret that we are no longer able to return submitted manuscript copies, as the process resulted in unnecessary expense.

Before publication, your work by law is copyright protected. When published, we will copyright the book in the author's name and register that copyright with the National Library of Australia.

It may require up to three months or more for our editors to review a submission and come to a decision. If you want to be sure we have received your manuscript, please enclose a stamped, self-addressed postcard that we will return when your manuscript is logged in.

A literary agent is not required for submission.
